Sinhagad Fort, Pune

Sinhagad, Sinhgarh, or Sinhgad is a fortress located roughly 30 kilometres southwest of the city of Pune. Previously called Kondhana the fort has been the site of many important battles, most notably the battle of Sinhagad in 1670. It was also strategically located at the centre of a string of other forts such as Rajgad, Purandar and Torna.Perched on an isolated cliff of the Bhuleswar range of the Sahyadri Mountains, it is situated on a hill rising 1312 metres above sea level. Given natural protection by its very steep slopes, the walls and bastions were constructed at only key places; it has two gates – the Kalyan Darwaza in the south-east and the Pune Darwaza in the north-east.There is a steep and narrow two lane road from the base of the fort to the top.

Sinhgad fort is located on a hilltop, it offers amazing views of Pune City.it is favourate ground for trekers as it is located at the 700m and it has an interesting track which people would love to explore. Don’t forget to have some delicious Pithla Bhakri and refreshing Buttermilkwhich are sold by the roadside vendors when you visit this majestic fort.
Sinhagad Fort is located at a distance of 35 km from Pune.
it is situated on a hill rising 800 m above the surrounding countryside. Site of the Battle of Sinhagad in 1670, the fort was previously called Kondana. At an elevation of 1,350 m above sea level, the fort lies on an isolated cliff of the Bhuleswar Range of the Sahyadari Mountains.
Kalyan Darwaja in the southeast and the Pune Darwaja in the northeast mark the entrances of the fort. Named after the sage Kaundinya, the previous edifice of the fort contained Kaundinyeshwar Temple, caves and carvings. Believed to have been built 2,000 years back, it was captured from the Koli tribal chieftain, Nag Naik, by Muhammad bin Tughlaq in 1328 AD.

Tanaji’s Memorial and tomb of Rajaram, Shivaji’s Younger son is also located within the complex of the fort.
Military stables, brewery and a Kali Temple are also located within the complex. Apart from the historic gates, the fort complex also contains a Hanuman statue.
Sinhagad is a popular weekend retreat as well as it is most popular amoung the trekers as a trekking destination.
From this Sinhagad fort, you can also see Panshet, Khadakwasla, andVarasgaon dams as well as the Torana fort. Sometimes this fort is also used for training purposes by the National Defence Academy.

Sinhagad in Pune is easily accessible by PCMT buses. Sinhagad fort is located at a distance of 860km from Bangalore, Nagpur 800km, Kolhapur 250km, Mumbai 200km and Ahmedabad 720km respectively.
